Earth Dragon

'Earth Dragon' by Sue Wookey

It was about time I painted a dragon but I had no idea it would take so long to hatch! The design was really quick - I knew I wanted it to be an Earth Dragon all spiralled up as though emerging from a deep pool of fiery light. Dragon then went through a long phase when it was 'finished', but not finished as I kept staring at it and wondering what it was that I wasn't quite satisfied with. Sometimes it's something as simple as the balance and depth of colour not being quite zingy enough, so Dragon had to go back for a few more washes. And the painting was done...

...but, the words! They took forever. This was a surprise as I have quite a deep feeling about land dragons and earth energy, but somehow getting that feeling into four lines proved nearly impossible. I suppose I should have expected it as I don't believe dragon eggs hatch quickly, no matter how much you stare at them. Eventually a crack appeared and I came up with the following:

Have you felt the call of dawn's first fire,
unfurling still through Earth's deep seams,
the Dragon's song of star and stone
and Merlin's lost and tangled dreams.

Phew. Got there in the end. In case you are wondering, after some musing and a short Facebook debate, we are all agreed this is a Mrs Dragon. Expect more eggs.
